In Matthew 9:27-34 we see the panic of Jesus' enemies grow in proportion to each fresh demonstration of the Savior's undeniable power. The Lord had just raised the daughter of a well-known official from the dead. It was done in public so it was useless to claim that it had not happened. The proof of His power even over the mighty inevitable thing called death itself was followed by the deliverance of the blind and the mute. In the case of the man who couldn't speak Jesus brought deliverance by the casting out of demons. His enemies, now desperate for a counter narrative, opted for the direst of explanations. Amazingly they announced that the great display of mercy, love and deliverance was a work of the devil himself. Very early in Matthew's Gospel the willingness of Jesus' enemies to fight Him with lies at the furthest extremity of wickedness is brought out into the open.
